Their interest, of course, also involved the pursuit of power. The ways in which they achieve this aim differ slightly, but share the same mechanisms at their core. By lying to their targets, both Mustafa and Kurtz gained power through the false projections of it. Mustafa led women to believe that his interest in them was a promise for the future, going beyond one night stands by, â€Å"†¦living with five girls simultaneously,† and â€Å"†¦giving each the impression that [he’d] marry her† (30-31). In addition to lying, he wields his power by taking advantage of their trust, and thereafter betraying it. Kurtz does not betray anyone, but he lies his way into becoming a god to those who would kill or be killed for him (such as his mistress who stood on the shore reaching out for him even as the pilgrims shot at her). He lets them believe that his guns were â€Å"†¦thunder and lightning† (93). His power came also from the very timber his voice. Even Marlow felt the effects: â€Å"Kurtz discoursed. A voice! A voice! It rang deep to the very last† (114). There was power in Mustafa’s voice as well, insofar as he seduced women with his storytelling. However, the difference lies in presentation: Mustafa gained his power from taking advantage of ignorance, while Marlow only had to present himself in such a way that would simply command it. For both hunger and power, the connection to colonialism, then, is that satisfaction of greed comes before everything, even life; the power and superiority exuded by the colonizers is a farce; and that bitter ends follow those who choose to admire and praise that which is inherently destructive. Though their actions were hideous, these characters were, in a way, the tragic heroes of their respective stories. Their tragic flaw was hubris; by wanting too much and truly believing that they could have it all, they became the orchestrators of their defeat. Mustafa, while talking about his conquests, interjects that he believes that, â€Å"There is a still pool in the depths of every woman that [he] knew how to stir† (Salih 27). In his contemplations on the position that Mustafa has put him in by making him responsible for his legacy, the unnamed narrator remarks, â€Å"There was no limit to his egoism and his conceit; despite everything he wanted history to immortalize him† (128). The expression â€Å"the bigger they are, the harder they fall† is an apt one here. Mustafa was too high on his own superiority to realize that he could have an equal, and that she could bring him to his knees. Jean Morris was the virus to his germ. His downfall began on the night that he murdered her with him expressing, â€Å"My blood was boiling and my head [was] in a fever† (134). His self had been dying ever since he had surrendered his will to her, their time together marked by his inability to control himself, resulting in a sort of self-imposed insan ity. Kurtz’s last days were marred by a fatal sickness and, questionably, literal insanity. When the trader talks about how he first found Kurtz, he juxtaposes an incident where Kurtz nearly shot him over a small amount of ivory with the introduction of his second illness (Conrad 94). His assumed entitlement to wealth correlated with the degradation of his body, yet even as his dependence on civilization was made clear by his impending death, he still denied his weakness: â€Å"Save me! Why, I’ve had to save you†¦ Sick! Not so sick as you would like to believeI’ll carry out my ideas yet† (103). He believed that he was entitled to everything. On the boat back he says, â€Å"My Intended, my ivory, my station, my river†¦everything belonged to him† (80). Marlow ascertains that his babblings continued until right before his death. He had begun to believe in his own lie, his own godliness, perhaps immortality. The idea that he should fail was inconce ivable. He thought himself the arbiter of his own fate, thought that his â€Å"impenetrable darkness† was enough to battle the darkness of the wild (115). Yet, in the words of Marlow, â€Å"†¦the wilderness had found him out early, and had taken on him a terrible vengeance for the fantastic invasion† (96-97). It was his Jean Morris: the insurmountable adversary that was destined to bring about his downfall. The narrators both come across the respective focus of interest after their downfall has been set into motion. Upon first impressions, Kurtz was â€Å"an animated image of death†¦shaking his hand with menaces†¦Ã¢â‚¬  (Conrad 100), while Mustafa was a â€Å"†¦strange combination of strength and weakness† (Salih 8). Yet, despite this the narrators still admired them. Marlow says that he affirms that Kurtz was a remarkable man because, â€Å"He had something to say. He said it† (Conrad 118). Salih’s narrator echoes this: â€Å"†¦he at least made a choice where I have chosen nothing (111). Amongst people who did not know their story, they still were successes. They were legacies. What does this say, then, for the observer and the conqueror? The conqueror is a disease, which leaves a trail of bodies in his wake, including his own. Mel Levines A Mind at a Time Mel Levine’s book, A Mind at a Time, describes many aspects of cognitive psychology and attempts to apply them to the educational system for young children. This book also makes suggestions for parents that have children with cognitive difficulties. The chapters in this book are designated to various aspects of cognitive psychology as they pertain to children. This paper focuses on chapter six in A Mind at a Time, which is titled â€Å"Making Arrangements: Our Spatial and Sequential Ordering Systems.† This is a very interesting chapter because it incorporates many aspects of cognitive psychology. In this chapter, Levine focuses on how children organize their world in terms of learning, thinking,†¦show more content†¦He states that there are five levels, starting with the most basic and finishing with the most intricate ways of learning and behaving. The levels are as follows: perceiving (level one), remembering (level two), creating (level three), organiz ing (level four), and thinking on a higher plane (level five). At the basic level, Levine states that the child must first be able to understand the relationships and the important characteristics of a spatial or sequential pattern. Once this is accomplished they can store this information for later use (remembering), which will help the child create output that is arranged spatially or sequentially (level three). Level four is where the child is expected to be good at â€Å"time management (sequential) and materials management (spatial)† (Levine, p.152). Finally the child is able to reason, solve problems, and form concepts using their spatial and sequential ordering systems. In the first half of the chapter, Levine discusses sequential ordering in terms of the five levels described above. He states that a child needs to be able to perceive the order of the days of the week, the months of the year, and perhaps the steps in solving a problem. He was born February 23, 1868 in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. In 1885 Du Bois came across his first encounter with the Jim Crow laws. He went to Harvard to receive his masters and before completing his masters he was offered an opportunity to study abroad in Berlin. Du Bois is known for many of his accomplishments such as being one of the most important civil rights activist, professor of sociology, historian, writer, and editor. In 1884 Dubois mother passed away forcing him to find a job. The principal of his high school helped him find a job in the local mill. In 1885 DuBois was given a scholarship to attended Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee, there is where he first encountered the Jim Crow law. In order for him to get through school money wise, he had to help teach others in the more poor areas of Tennessee during his summer breaks. The experience of the Jim Crow law which legalized segregation between blacks and whites, is what caused him to want to become an activist. In 1885 Dubois was in Berlin studying for two years and came back to the United States eager to study African American history. Dubois attended Harvard to work hard on his paper for The Suppression of the African Slave Trade. These images can tell you something about the clouds overhead and possible changes in the weather.All of these images are created by light shining through cirrostratus clouds. These clouds occur at an altitude of 6,000-12,000 metres. They appear as a thin sheet or layer (strata) that is pure white. The layer of cloud is so thin (only 100-450 metres) that is doesn’t obscure the sun or moon, so you should be able to see your shadow.Cirrostratus is made of many types of ice crystals. However, four crystal shapes are responsible for producing most of the commonly see haloes-plate crystals, columns, capped columns and bullets.The most obvious halo is found around the sun. If the layer of cirrostratus is extensive, you’ll see an entire ring. Within the layer of cloud, sunlight is striking and passing through the sides of randomly-oriented ice crystals. As the sunlight passes through each crystal, the light changes direction, or refracts. The radius of the hale depends on the amount of change in the direction of the sun’s light. Usually this is 22 degrees. Since the sun is 1/2 of a degree across, the radius of the halo is 44 sun-widths. Occasionally you may see a second halo at 46 degrees from the sun (that is, with a radius of 92 sun-widths). This is produced by sunlight passing through both the side and bottom of each crystal. Moonlight will also produce a halo, around the moon, with the proper layer of cirrostatus.Another common optical effect is known as â€Å"mock suns† or â€Å"sun dogs† or â€Å"parhelia† (Greek for â€Å"with the sun†). These bright spots on either side of the sun, outside of the halo, occur when sunlight passes through the sides of capped columns, bullets and plate crystals, when these crystals are arranged with their sides vertical. The crystals wobble, diffusing and smearing the colours of the mock sun. You can see haloes and mock suns more clearly if you block out your view of the real sun by holding your hand in front of it at arm’s length. Another spectactular optical effect is the solar pillar. This is a vertical shaft of light the same colour as the sun stretching upwards from the sun and is most often seen at sunset or sunrise. It’s produced by sunlight reflecting of the base of plate and capped column crystals in the clouds. You can also see pillars in an ice fog, when it’s illuminated by streelights, or airport runway lights, for instance. The appearance of all these optical images is a good indication that the weather will change. Strong vertical air currents associated with low pressure storms carry moist air skyward, where the water freezes. High speed winds above the storm system push the ice crystals on ahead. When you see haloes around the sun or moon, you can be sure of two things-there are cirrostratus clounds above and, in a day or two, the skies will darken with an approaching storm.

After making the association that the scarlet letter is a sinful thing, she tells her mother that she does not wear the scarlet letter yet. Hester responds to Pearl and says that she hopefully never will. Pearl is confused, and proceeds to ask her mother if the scarlet letter â€Å"will not come of its own accord when [she] [is] woman grown† (Hawthorne 221). The confusion among the young character reveals that she believes that her mother represents all the women in the community. By that, Pearl essentially believes that it is only natural that all people will eventually become sinful and bear the scarlet letter to represent it. It is a valid point but, Hester does not tell her whether she’s correct with the assumption. Instead, Hester avoids the topic and tells Pearl to â€Å"runaway†¦and catch the sunshine! It will soon be gone† (Hawthorne 221). Hester’s response can be interpreted in both a literal and figurative way. The literal response is telling her daughter to run and play before its starts getting dark. The figurative meaning is much more complex. In the paragraph above, sunshine has already been identified as ones pureness and innocence. When Hester tells her daughter that the sunshine is receding and advises Pearl to catch it while she still can, she is emphasizing the fact that sin is a part of life.
